Fabrice Gygi

Swiss artist Fabrice Gygi (b. 1965) copies objects that he observes in the world around him. He uses their characteristics in forms and materials but displaces their function and context. Gygi creates confusing resemblances. Objects such as a mine or a floating life raft are transformed into minimalistic sculptures in exaggerated size. The big size architectural sculptures bring social and political issues in focus. Collective necessities and general symbols of protection or aggression are being challenged. Implications of power, control, violence and fear are articulated through social paradoxes, when Gygi for example hangs a Christmas tree in steel upside down from the ceiling and thereby questions the notion of peaceful happy holidays.
