Erik A. Frandsen

Danish artist Erik A. Frandsen (b. 1957) is one of the co-founders of  the workshop Værkstedet Værst in 1981. Frandsen was also a part of De unge vilde, a Danish group of artists, who insisted on painting in a period where movements such as minimalism and conceptual art dominated the art scene. Erik A. Frandsen has continuously explored new materials and tools to deal with the notion of a picture. Glass mosaics, large mirror like steel plates with engraved flowers and neon light sculptures in bended fluorescent tubes are great examples of how Frandsen expands the field of picture making. In his oeuvre Frandsen has often used photographic negatives as the motivic grounding. Scenes from his private life stimulate a sense of intimacy and at the same time there is always a formal distance in his way of dealing with the family portraits.
