Thomas Ruff

 

German artist Thomas Ruff (b. 1958) has worked with photography for more than thirty years. He is known for his revival of the portrait in large format and his conceptual serial photography. Thomas Ruff has experimented with a multitude of methods and he keeps finding new ways of exploring the possibilities of photography. His innovative practice ranges from digitally retouched architectural photos to computer-generated prints of psychedelic fields. He has photographed the interior of German apartments with typical features of the 1950s. In the 1980s he had a special interest in architecture and portraits, and in the 1990s he made some beautiful night images taken with night vision. Ruff also uses photos of others, which he did in the series with pornographic nudes and low resolution pictures from the internet - and always with an allusion to the media itself.
