The American artist Lawrence Weiner (b. 1942) began his career over forty years ago with an interest in minimalism and conceptual art. Since the 1970s Weiner has turned to language as his primary occupation. Weiner transforms language into material pieces in both galleries and public spaces. The text works are incorporated in videos, films, installations and public art pieces. Weiner consistently invokes social situations that elicit responses to issues of language, philosophy, theater, and art. He adds visual symbolism to linguistic phrases and epigrammatic statements in a way, which engages the spectator and makes language a visual art form.
