Markus Lüpertz

The German artist Markus Lüpertz (b. 1941) works within a synthesis of pictorial motive and abstraction. He uses imagery from art history, but without being revolutionary or insisting on something new. In a more intuative way he creates his own traditional stilleben and abstract formations. He has also painted political motives associated with the Nazi era. There is no exhaustive description or interpretation fitting Lüpertz' paintings. His art contains something beyond our understanding and at the same time, he has stated that he wants to represent some kind of compressed meaning in his art.
