John Armleder

Swiss artist John Armleder (b. 1948) has for four decades engaged in all forms of visual expressions. He is a sculptor, painter, critic, a performance and installation artist. He is always challenging the notion of aesthetic practice by combining high and low, referring to art history and examining the context in which art is displayed. Armleder is almost manic in his way of exploring new methods, techniques and materials - always searching for new colors, textures and unpredictable results. During the 1960s and 1970s John Armleder was involved with the Fluxus movement and he is also known as the founder of Group Ecart in 1969.

Supernova is a series of 19 lithographs made during John Armleder's  first stay at the workshop in 2003. Lanterne Chinoise, Lampe, Corolles and Spirale Blanche were made in 2008. The latter is a series of ten lithographs. John Armleder used fish and candles as a tool for experimenting with the lithogrphic technique. He challenges our expectations of how a lithograph can be made and what the lithographic media is. The 10 lithographs are a colorful boost and a fine example of how contemporary artists work with lithography in a conceptual way.
