Cornelius Völker German artist Cornelius Völker (b. 1971) creates rich paintings with great awareness of the medium it self and references to art history. The painterly character in Völker's paintings attracts you at once. Völker takes full advantage of the traditional medium by using wide brush strokes, splashing colors and plenty of oily paint. The stilleben and motives by artists such as Gerhard Richter, Edouard Manet, Diego Vélasquez and Claes Oldenburg are explored, adapted and interperted by Völker's hand. The bright colors and thick layers of paint form and transform the motives into abstract texture. Everyday life objects such as a teabag a guinea pig or an over sized plate of chocolate are portrayed with a great sense of the materiality. Characteristic features such as the fur of a dog, bare skin or the current in water are being reinforced and accentuated to an extent of representing the quintessence of painting. News |
