While new media and the information age has had a great impact on contemporary artists Belgian artist Luc Tuymans (b. 1958) has continued to paint and to believe in the relevance of painting. Meanwhile in the early 1980s he lost faith in the medium and gave it up for two years. During this time he worked as a film-maker, and when he returned to painting with new energy, he introduced new techniques such as cropping, close-ups, framing and sequencing, which remain key elements of his work today. Tuymans' paintings cover historical subjects such as the Holocaust, religious motives, everyday life objects and popular inspirations from film and television.
